BruinCorps AmeriCorps VISTA Project
AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965 and incorporated into the AmeriCorps network of programs in 1993, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 40 years.
VISTA members focus their efforts on building the capacity of organizations and communities to fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities. VISTAs develop programs to meet a need, write grants, and recruit and train volunteers. VISTAs work to strengthen an organization so it can continue to serve the needs of the community once AmeriCorps VISTA’s support has ended. In return for their service, AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a modest living allowance and health benefits during their service, and have the option of receiving a $5,550 AmeriCorps Education Award or a $1,500 stipend after completing their service. About 6,500 VISTAs are placed each year in more than 1,200 projects in low-income communities around the country.
Through a grant from AmeriCorps, the UCLA BruinCorps VISTA Project partners with community based organizations and schools to establish and sustain active College and Career Centers in middle schools, high schools and community-based organizations. VISTA volunteers (recent UCLA college graduates and other college graduates) provide college admissions information, literature, college application assistance, college field trips, and train long term volunteers to help adults and students navigate the college process while encouraging and promoting a college going culture.
